Hello, world
A first entry, and a few words about what this place is for.
Every blog begins with this post, and this one is no exception. It exists mostly to prove that the plumbing works: a request reaches the server, nginx finds a file on disk, and that file arrives in your browser looking the way it was meant to.
There is no framework behind it and no build step to keep alive. The only JavaScript is a dozen lines that remember whether you prefer the lights on or off. Each page is a hand-written HTML file in a folder. That is a deliberate choice. Plain files are easy to read, easy to back up, and will still open in a browser long after today’s tools have moved on.
What to expect#
Notes, mostly. Things worth writing down after working them out the long way: software, servers, and whatever else seems worth keeping. Some entries will be long and most will be short. None of them will ask you to accept cookies.
If you’d like to follow along, there’s an RSS feed. If you’re curious about how the pages are set, the colophon covers the typefaces and colours, and the field guide shows every element the stylesheet knows how to draw.
Thanks for stopping by.
